Kids Are Like That!

Day One

She was so excited. It was a new beginning in her life, moving in to a new house. They say home is where the heart is. She felt like she was finally at home.

Day Two

She was singing along Imagine Dragons’ Radioactive and suddenly the doorbell rang. Never used to having unexpected visitors, she secretly wished that whoever rang the doorbell would leave after ringing a couple of times. Unfortunately it did not happen. It was her neighbor with her two kids.

Small talks were exchanged and it was a so-far-so-good feeling. Then slowly the nightmare unfolded before her eyes. It was like the two hyperactive kids were off their leashes! They were up and exploring every inch of the house, rummaging through every drawer and unpacked boxes they could find. She was losing her calm and cool by the second, looking at the kids running here and there throwing things around. ‘I wanted to scream at them to leave!’ She said her husband. ‘Kids are like that!’ He was cool about it.

Day Everyday

The house was a mess everytime after the kids left and she was nowhere close to liking them. She even began wondering if her heart was that shallow to hate having kids around. ‘I will run away if this happens daily.’ She was clearly angry. ‘Kids are like that!’ Said her husband, everytime.

Day Somewhere-Close-To-Fifty

Another neighbor moved in. She shook off the thought of having more kids around because it was horrifying. But the new neighbor’s baby was just few months old. ‘Not a problem for few more years’, she was relaxed.

The new neighbor visited one fine evening with her baby. She held the baby in her arms and slowly she realized what she was missing out in her life. Those tiny pink arms that touched her cheeks, opened up a new world for her.

The next day the hyperactive kids visited. Well, it had become a usual routine by then. But she did not throw a fit. Not anymore. Her husband raised an eyebrow at her in complete surprise.

‘Kids are like that.’ She shrugged her shoulders and walked away with a smile.

    Black Rags and Blue Pajamas

I’m in my sky-blue pajamas, sleeping in my bed close to the wall with my right knee resting on it. I always like to sleep that way, like a lizard sticking to the wall.

Sound sleep. Suddenly, I feel something is off and I want to wake up. I try but my eyes wouldn’t open. My eyelids are heavier than the heaviest metal ball. I should be dead tired, after all the day’s work. Few more hours of sleep wouldn’t hurt.

Again, something is in the dark. Before I try to open my eyes, again, a slight panic sets in. I feel the ice cold breeze from the window, making the hairs on my hand and neck stand straight up. I remember closing the window before going to sleep.

With great difficulty I pry my eyes open. It is still dark. Everything is foggy. My eyes are fixated in the direction of the window, waiting for my vision to get clear. I want to sit up but I cannot move even a muscle but I don’t mind at this moment. All I want is to see what is wrong with the window.

Slowly the fog in my eyes clears. There is a figure sitting on the window sill from outside, holding the window rails, it’s eyes fixated on me. My heart jumps to my throat. It is a pitch black figure in rags. The face is nothing but cold eyes and bottomless shadow.

I want to scream but only muffled sounds comes out of my mouth, like something got stuck in my throat. The figure just sits there, staring at me. It doesn’t move. It doesn’t make a sound.

I still can’t move a muscle. Suddenly, I hear a different sound tearing away the silence. I shoot my eyes to the window only to see the figure trying to pull out the rails with its own hands. The sound of the rails against the wall synchronises with the ticking of the clock. A fresh wave of fear floods my heart. It is only a matter of seconds. With a loud bang, the rails comes off.

I’m in my sky-blue pajamas, sleeping in my bed close to the wall with my right knee resting on it. I open my eyes. The room is bright. The windows are closed.
    It is a Good Morning!

    You and I

    I was empty

    Till you saw me

    I was lost

    Till you smiled at me

    I was down

    Till you talked to me

    My heart, dormant

    Till you loved me

    And I was not living

    Till I loved you back.

Now the world is in colors

    Life overflowing

    A gentle breeze everywhere

    Moments freezing

    Love is in the air

    I’m flying.
